vswpaper's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prompted by E.M. Forster

Latest thought is about Clarissa's connection to Septimus, and whether it'd be overstated as interpenetration, as the essence of each flowing a little into the other. And how would that compare to Lady Bruton's connection to the men who come to lunch? If the Clarissa-Septimus one works, it leads nicely to the comingling of the characters in The Waves. It also sort of opens the door to having to examine all the characters' connections to one another in all the novels, which would be another whole dissertation.

But it's the metaphysical, rather than the social or even the emotional that I'm thinking of, and if I restrict it to that maybe it'd just be Mrs. Ramsay and Lily who'd be relevant in To the Lighthouse.
